Vehicle Registration:

On registering a new vehicle to yourself:  If the vehicle is less than fifteen (15) years old, you need a Title or a Certificate of Origin and proof that you are a Chester resident.  If the vehicle is fifteen (15) years or older, you need proof that you are a Chester resident and one of the following: the old Title, a copy of the previous NH registration, or the form TDMV 19A (Verification of Vehicle Identification Form).  If you need the TDMV 19A Form, please call the non-emergency Police phone number (887-2080), and they will come out to check the VIN and bring the Form.

If you are transferring the vehicle, I need the old registration from the car you are taking off the road ( a photocopy is not acceptable, and remember that the person on the registration and the title have to match (a wife cannot transfer a husband's plates or vice versa).

Vehicle registrations expire on the last day of the owner's birth month, except in the case of a company-owned or leased vehicle. In this case, the expiration date is determined by the first letter of the company name. The Town of Chester forwards registration reminders to vehicle owners; however, it is the registrant's responsibility to renew the vehicle in the event of lost or misdirected mail. Registrations being renewed by mail must include a self-addressed envelope in order to avoid mailing delays. There is no grace period on expired registrations.

If you have a special problem with registering a car, please call me during my normal business hours and I will be more than happy to accommodate your schedule by making a 6:30 AM appointment with you on Monday through Friday.  In order to assure that I am in the office on the day you wish to come in early, please call me the day before (to avoid inconvenience to you if I am at a workshop or attending a class on the day you happened to come in).  It is preferable if you do not wait until the last day of the month to register as there are usually long lines and, therefore, a longer wait for you. Any forms needed like a change of address, duplicate title application, or application for a certified copy of a registration can be picked up at any Town Clerk's office or regular motor vehicle office.

The renewal letters you receive are just a courtesy; and if you do not receive one, you can still register your car by using your plate number here.
