What is a Knox box?

A Knox box is a steel enforced box that is mounted to a secure object, such as a wall, post, frame. Anything that won’t be easily removed. The box has a front plate with a key slot, the key (Chester FD Specific) is secured in the possession of the Chester Fire Department and only a CFD member can access the key and open the box. Inside the box there is a hook to hold any number of keys or lock codes to gain access to a residence or business.

Who can utilize a Knox box?

Any Chester resident can purchase and install a Knox box. It can be utilized by residential houses or business.

Why would I need a Knox box?

A Knox box is a secure box that you mount at your residence or business that holds keys to gain access to the building or house. These are useful in the event of an emergency, it allows the fire department to gain access to the residence or business without the use of tools which can take time and possibly cause damage that becomes an issue for the owner. Whether it is a medical issue that the resident is unable to answer the door, or a fire issue and no one is home at the residence or working at the business. It also has been beneficial to have in the event of an accidental lockout; the fire department would be able to access the lockbox for the owner.

How secure is a Knox box?

A Knox box has several safeties to ensure that it is secure for the owner. The box is mounted by the owner; in any location they choose at the residence (preferably on front of building). The Knox box itself can only be opened by a Chester Fire Department Knox key. These keys are locked in each apparatus. they are only accessed by a PIN number specific to each member of the department. Which logs who accessed the key, when it was accessed and when it was returned.   

How do I put keys in or change out keys in my Knox box?

If you call the fire department, they will be able to send down a fire department member with a Knox key to open your Knox box and assist you with changing or adding keys.
