SURCHARGES NOW APPLY TO REGISTRATIONS FOR ELECTRIC AND HYBRID CARS
Effective September 1, 2023, there will be a surcharge for registering Battery Electric and Plug-In Hybrid vehicles. The surcharge will be $100 for Battery Electric cars and $50 for Plug-In Hybrid cars.

Q: Why am I being charged a new fee?
A: On July 1st, 2023 House Bill two (2) became effective, requiring municipal agents to collect the new surcharge
Q: What is HB2?
A: HB2 is a house bill that was passed by the legislature and signed by the Governor on June 6th, 2023, effective July 1st, 2023
Q: Does HB2 Impact me?
A: Do you have a Battery Electric or Plug-in Hybrid Vehicle?
If Yes – When you register your vehicle at your city or town hall, the fees will be included. There is a separate line that lists the additional fees
If No – There is no impact to you
Q: What if I buy a battery electric or plug-in hybrid vehicle outside of my birth month?
A: As with every other plate type, fees are prorated by month
Q: What if I have a battery electric or plug-in hybrid vehicle and I trade it in for a gas or diesel model?
A: You will receive a prorated credit towards the new vehicle at the time of registration

A: Yes
Any person or agency not required to pay gas tax, by law
