Changing Party Affiliation

There are Two Ways to Change Your Party Affiliation:

*party affiliation changes may have specific cut off dates depending on upcoming elections such as primaries, specific dates will be announced*

You may change your party affiliation with your local Supervisors of the Checklist. The Supervisors of the Checklist hold regular voter registration/change sessions in their office, Room #6 at Town Hall.

You may change your party affiliation in person at the Town Clerk’s office at 84 Chester Street. The Town Clerk's hours are:

  • Monday & Wednesday: 8:00am to 2:00pm
  • Tuesday & Thursday: 10:00am to 6:00pm
  • Friday: Closed to the public

The Executive Order that allowed voters to make changes to their party affiliation by mail has expired.

If you are an undeclared voter, you may take a ballot for either party during a State or Presidential primary election.  However, when you vote on a party ballot in the primary, you become a registered member of that party unless you actively request to return to undeclared status with the Supervisors of the Checklist.  This can be done before leaving the polling place, or at one of their regularly scheduled registration/change sessions.

You may not change your party affiliation during the period of time between the first day of the filing period for the primary election and/or the presidential primary election and the date of the primary election itself.  For the 2024 primaries, the last date to change party affiliation was October 6, 2023.
